Quantitative structure-activity relationship models are used in toxicology to predict the effects of organic compounds on aquatic organisms. Common filter feature selection methods use correlation statistics to rank features, but this approach considers only the correlation between a single feature and the response variable and does not take into account feature redundancy. Although the minimal redundancy maximal relevance approach considers the redundancy among features, direct removal of the redundant features may result in loss of prediction accuracy, and cross-validation of training sets to select an optimal subset of features is time-consuming. In this paper, we describe the development of a feature selection method, Chi-MIC-share, which can terminate feature selection automatically and is based on an improved maximal information coefficient and a redundant allocation strategy. We validated Chi-MIC-share using three environmental toxicology datasets and a support vector regression model. The results show that Chi-MIC-share is more accurate than other feature selection methods. We also performed a significance test on the model and analyzed the single-factor effects of the reserved descriptors.

Herein, we disclose an effective model for regioselective thiolation of the aromatic C-H bond by thiol activation instead of arene activation. The rational design and synthesis of a novel dialkylbiarylphosphine ligand, 2′-(dimethylphosphine)-2,6-dimethoxy-1,1′-biphenyl (MeSPhos), for palladium-catalyzed C-N cross-coupling reactions is described. Based on previous results, it was hypothesized that a ligand with electronic properties similar to (2-biphenyl)dimethylphosphine (MeJPhos) but with greater steric bulk would allow the cross-coupling of previously inaccessible deactivated aryl chlorides. As predicted, MeSPhos exhibited similar electronic properties to MeJPhos. However, MeSPhos surprisingly showed a significantly smaller steric profile than MeJPhos. In comparison to the widely used CySPhos (2-dicyclohexylphosphino-2′,6′-dimethoxybiphenyl), MeSPhos promoted the oxidative addition of highly deactived aryl chlorides for which CySPhos was ineffective, but significantly decreased the rate of reductive elimination. The kinetics of cross-coupling reactions showed that the altered steric and electronic parameters of MeSPhos had a significant impact on the rate of cross-coupling, and the decreased steric bulk had a profound deleterious impact on the catalyst stability. With regard to this latter point, only the most activated aryl chlorides reacted at a sufficient rate to overcome the rate of catalyst decomposition. These results indicate that the relationship between the electron-donating ability of the phosphine ligand and the rate of oxidative addition is complex, and they also illustrate that increasing substitution on the biphenyl structure does not necessarily increase the steric bulk of the ligand.

Perovskite crystal grain size control, grain boundary passivation, and grain bridging are the keys to obtaining high efficiency in perovskite solar cells. A small amount of semi-conducting single-walled carbon nanotubes added to a perovskite active layer can achieve this. In particular, the surfactants attached to the semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes a crucial role. In this work, we synthesized a new surfactant, 4,6-di(anthracen-9-yl)-1,3-phenylene bis(dimethylcarbamate), which has a polyaromatic group on one end and a urea-analogue carbamate group on the other end. The polyaromatic anthracene end functions as a nanotweezer clenching the carbon nanotubes strongly via pi-pi interaction while the carbamate end interacts with Pb2+, functioning as a strong Lewis base. In addition, the new surfactant has conjugated double bonds with a suitable bandgap, resulting in enhanced charge mobility in the perovskite film. Overall, the new surfactant-clenched semiconducting carbon nanotubes showcase superior effectiveness as passivators and charge bridges in perovskite solar cells as compared to the conventional deoxycholate surfactant-wrapped semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes. The new surfactant-attached semiconducting carbon nanotube-added NH3CH3PbI3-based perovskite solar cells exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 20.7%, which is higher than that of the reference devices with no additives (18.4%) and the previously reported semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube-added devices (19.7% in this work and 19.5% in the literature).

Potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) as both the supporting electrolyte and sulfur source and methanol as the methylation reagent are used. Because it is undisputable that lignin depolymerization is a must to make the biorefinery concept economically feasible, several efforts are put toward it; however, a lot of catalyst designing is required to achieve efficient depolymerization activities. In this work, we show a systematic approach in the synthesis and characterization of ionic liquids (ILs) with varying combinations of cations (imidazole, benzimidazole, phosphonium, and ammonium) and anions (HSO4, PTS (p-toluenesulfonate), Cl, H2PO4, SnCl3, FeCl4, and CuCl3) for the depolymerization of lignin into low-molecular weight aromatic fractions (<220 g/mol) under mild reaction conditions (120 degrees C, 1 h, ambient pressure). In a methodical approach, effects of various reaction parameters such as temperature (70-170 degrees C), time (15-360 min), pressure (N-2, 0.5-3 MPa), solvents and substrate, and so forth were studied to achieve best activity. Among all the catalysts, IL with the imidazolium cation and HSO4 as the anion showed best activity (78% yield). Subsequent to depolymerization, three aromatic monomers (5 wt % pure vanillin) were isolated using flash column chromatography. These aromatic monomers were characterized using gas chromatography (GC), GC-mass spectrometry, and NMR techniques for their purity. Hammett acidity functions (H-0) of ILs were measured using UV-vis photo-spectroscopy, and values are correlated with lignin depolymerization results. Lignin and tetrahydrofuran-soluble products were thoroughly characterized using assorted physicochemical techniques such as NMR (H-1 and C-13), gel permittivity chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, and so forth.
