The development of carbonaceous materials as metal-free catalysts integrating different types of catalysis in a single system represents a significant advance in cascade/tandem organic synthesis. Zero-dimensional carbon dots with tuneable optical properties and easily modifiable surface functionalities can be harnessed as a carbocatalyst for merging photooxidation and acid-catalyzed reactions in one pot. Herein, we explore carbon dots decorated with hydrogen sulfate groups as a photocatalyst for the dehydrogenative cross-coupling of xanthenes with ketones, arenes and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds that showed high efficiency and selectivity under visible-light irradiation. The sulphated carbon dots demonstrate dual catalytic properties, wherein they induced the rapid photooxidation of xanthenes in the presence of molecular oxygen to form a hydroperoxy intermediate followed by coupling of nucleophiles catalysed by the acidic surface functional groups. The methodology represents an operationally simple pathway for the generation of C-C coupling products in a short reaction time with wide substrate scopes under mild conditions. The catalyst is easily separable and can be reused over multiple cycles with good efficiency.

A trifluoroacetic-acid-mediated desulfurilative sulfonylthiolation of arenes using SS-morpholino dithiosulfonate is described. This system is based on selective activation of the morpholino group over the tosyl group of the doubly transformable sulfur surrogate. Mechanistic studies suggested that the reaction proceeds through electrophilic aromatic substitution followed by sulfur extrusion. The wide substrate scope of this reaction and the transformability of the resulting thiosulfonates enable expeditious access to divergent multifunctionalized sulfides.

Phenanthroline ligands and [Ir(cod)(OMe)](2) form complexes that catalyze the silylation of aromatic and aliphatic C-H bonds. However, no experimental data on the identity of complexes related to the mechanism of this process or the mechanisms by which they react to functionalize C-H bonds have been reported. Herein, we describe our studies on the mechanism of the iridium-catalyzed silylation of aryl C-H bonds. The resting state of the catalyst is an iridium disilyl hydride complex (phenanthroline)Ir(SiMe(OTMS)(2))(2)(H)(L), in which L varies with the arene and additives. An iridium disilyl hydride complex was isolated, characterized, and allowed to react with arenes to form aryl silanes. The kinetics of the reactions of electron-rich and electron-poor arenes showed that the rate-limiting step varies with the electronic properties of the arene. Computational studies on related iridium silyl complexes revealed that the high activity of iridium complexes containing sterically encumbered phenanthroline ligands is due to a change in the number of silyl groups bound to iridium between the resting state of the catalyst containing the hindered phenanthroline and that containing less-hindered phenanthroline.

A simple, facile and efficient method has been developed for the Friedel-Crafts benzoylation of arenes using magnetic gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles under solvent-free sonication. The gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were used as an efficient and magnetically recoverable catalyst for the synthesis of aromatic ketones in good to excellent yields at room temperature under solvent-free. The reaction occurred with high regioselectivity under mild condition. The magnetic gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are economically synthesized in large-scale, easily separated from the reaction mixture by an external magnet and able to be reused several times without significant loss of the catalytic performance, which make them easy application to industrial processes. The geometry changes of two rotamers of 1,3-dimethoxybenzene were determined from a combined fit of line intensities in fluorescence emission spectra, obtained via pumping different vibronic transition and the changes of rotational constants upon electronic excitation. The separation of desired monomers from a liquid-phase mixture of lignin depolymerization products is necessary to facilitate their upscaling and upgrading for industrial applications. One effective method to separate multiple liquid-phase products is countercurrent chromatography (CCC), which is a common liquid chromatography technique that separates target solutes based on differences in their partitioning in a biphasic solvent system. Effective CCC separation requires the selection of solvent compositions to tune solute partition coefficients. To alleviate the experimental burden of selecting optimal solvent systems, we apply the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) method to compute partition coefficients of representative lignin monomers from four currently used depolymerization strategies in standard solvent systems. We further design new ternary and quaternary solvent systems that are predicted to further improve separation efficacy. On the basis of these predicted partition coefficients and empirical solvent selection criteria for CCC measurements, we suggest a range of solvent systems that would be suitable for the effective separation of aromatic lignin-derived products via CCC or similar liquid-liquid extraction methods.
