Described herein is a novel one-pot, three-component reaction where aldehydes, electron-rich arenes, and TMSCN in the presence of BF3-OEt2 allowed direct access to a number of diarylacetonitriles under mild reaction conditions in good to excellent yields. Implementation of this assembly protocol to a concise synthetic approach to shoreaphenol, a bioactive oligostilbenoid natural product, is also demonstrated.

A simple protocol to synthesize indenes efficiently by PTSA catalyzed tandem Friedel-Crafts alkylation/hydroarylation of tertiary propargylic alcohol with electron-rich arenes is described. The desired indenes were obtained regioselectively in good to very good yields under mild reaction conditions. The diene methyl ethers or acetates, constructed from the Li-Br exchange/addition reactions of 2-vinylbenzaldehydes and 2-(but-3en-1-yl)bromoarenes followed by etherification or acetylation of the corresponding alcohols, smoothly underwent the ring-closing metathesis (RCM) by using Hoveyda-Grubbs II as a catalyst to provide the corresponding benzannulated (Z)-cyclononenes as single products in good yields (up to 75%). The ensuing one-pot acid-mediated transannular cyclization/nucleophilic addition at C7 furnished the corresponding tetrahydro-5H-benzo[c]fluorenes as single stereoisomers with the exclusive cis stereochemistry at the ring junction (C5-C6) and trans at the site of nucleophilic attack (C6-C7) on the three contiguous stereogenic centers in good to excellent yield (up to 94%). The developed strategy was general; the reaction conditions were compatible with hydride, azide, and electron-rich aromatics as nucleophiles. In addition, various methoxylated benzannulated cyclononene acetates could be employed as substrates. Thus, tetrahydro-5H-benzo[c]fluorenes could be prepared in four steps from appropriately substituted bromoarenes and benzaldehydes in good yields (up to 56%) with excellent stereo- and regio-control.

An approach for the calculation of the vaporization enthalpies of aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds at T = 298.15 K with accuracy competitive with experiment was proposed. The vaporization enthalpies may be calculated from the solution enthalpies of liquid and solvation enthalpies in benzene. The solution enthalpies of liquids were shown to be constant within a given type of aromatic compounds. For a set of 67 liquid and 41 solid aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds not capable of intermolecular hydrogen bonding, it was experimentally demonstrated that the solution enthalpies of liquids or supercooled liquids in benzene were equal to 1 +/- 1 kJ . mol(-1). The way to consider intermolecular hydrogen bonding, e.g., in phenol, aniline, pyrrole derivatives, was also proposed. The methods for solvation enthalpy calculation were proposed previously. The calculated and literature vaporization enthalpies values of 415 aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds were compared. Average absolute deviation amounted to 1.3 kJ . mol(-1). A molecular crystal of a 2-D hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) undergoes an unusual structural transformation after solvent removal from the crystal pores during activation. The conformationally flexible host molecule, ABTPA, adapts its molecular conformation during activation to initiate a framework expansion. The microcrystalline activated phase was characterized by three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED), which revealed that ABTPA uses out-of-plane anthracene units as adaptive structural anchors. These units change orientation to generate an expanded, lower density framework material in the activated structure. The porous HOF, ABTPA-2, has robust dynamic porosity (SA(BET) = 1 183 m(2) g(-1)) and exhibits negative area thermal expansion. We use crystal structure prediction (CSP) to understand the underlying energetics behind the structural transformation and discuss the challenges facing CSP for such flexible molecules.
