Herein, we report a redox-neutral Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of two readily available precursors to produce the corresponding ketones that are an important structural motif in numerous biologically active entities. By the use of a commercially available nickel/Triphos catalytic system, a range of easily accessible alkenyl primary alcohols and aryltriflates can be converted in a rapidly assembled fashion to valuable ketones with good yields and wide functional group tolerance. We also demonstrate the utility of this transformation by late-stage functionalization of a large set of complex molecules with good efficiency, which offers a distinct entry to more functionalized aromatic ketones.

Three-, four-, and five-component host/guest crystals with multi-color and white light emission is described. Our strategy is based on the confinement of aromatic donor guests in supramolecular acceptor hosts. The supramolecular acceptor hosts (NDI-TPFB) were composed of N,N’-dipyrid-3-yl-1,4,5,8- naphthalenediimide (NDI) with two tris(pentafluorophenyl) borane (TPFB) linked by boron-nitrogen dative bonds as Lewis acid-base pairs, which spontaneously formed upon mixing the components. In the first part, a set of three-component crystals with 14 different aromatic guests were characterized to elucidate the structure-property relationships. In the latter part, a series of 17 types of four-and fivecomponent crystals were formed with the use of binary or ternary guest inclusion systems, and their structural and photophysical properties were investigated. Among them, 14 types of crystals were formed effectively without destroying the crystal structure, as determined by X-ray diffraction and fluorescence microscopy. Notably, flexible color tuning, including white light emission, was realized by tuning the guest ratio and the combinations. Various intermolecular interactions such as C-H center dot center dot center dot F interactions, pi-pi stacking, charge-transfer interactions, and inclusion phenomena were important for forming the crystals. This approach that yields a rational solution of multicomponent crystals could be potentially useful for obtaining novel photofunctional solid-state systems.

Surface-confined synthesis is a promising approach to build complex molecular nanostructures including macrocycles. However, despite the recent advances in on-surface macro- cyclization under ultrahigh vacuum, selective synthesis of monodisperse and multicomponent macrocycles remains a challenge. Here, we report on an on-surface formation of [6 + 6] Schiff-base macrocycles via dynamic covalent chemistry. The macrocycles form two-dimensional crystalline domains on the micrometer scale, enabled by dynamic conversion of open-chain oligomers into well-defined similar to 3.0 nm hexagonal macrocycles. We further show that by tailoring the length of the alkyl substituents, it is possible to control which of three possible products-oligomers, macrocycles, or polymers-will form at the surface. In situ scanning tunneling microscopy imaging combined with density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations unravel the synergistic effect of surface confinement and solvent in leading to preferential on-surface macrocyclization.

It remains challenging to achieve the selective cleavage of C-C bonds in lignin or lignin model compounds to produce aromatic products in high yield and selectivity. We have developed a redox-neutral photocatalytic strategy to accomplish this goal in both beta-O-4 and beta-1 lignin models at room temperature (RT) via proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process without any pretreatments of substrate, by adjusting the alkalinity of base to obtain a lignin models/base PCET pair with a bond dissociation free energy close to 102 kcal/mol. Without breaking down C-beta-C-gamma bond and any C-O bonds, this PCET method is 100% atom economy and produces exclusive C-alpha-C-beta bond cleavage products, such as benzaldehydes (up to 97%) and phenyl ethers (up to 96%), in high to excellent yields and selectivities. Preliminary studies indicated that the PCET strategy is also effective for the depolymerization of native lignin at RT, thus providing significantly important foundation to the depolymerization of lignin. A mild one-pot protocol for the synthesis of symmetrical biaryls by sequential Ir-catalyzed C-H borylation and Cu-catalyzed homocoupling of arenes is described. The regiochemistry of the biaryl formed is sterically controlled as dictated by the C-H borylation step. The methodology is also successfully extended to heteroarenes. Some of the products obtained by this approach are impossible to obtain via the Ullmann or the Suzuki coupling protocols. Finally, we have shown a one-pot sequence describing C-H borylation/Cu-catalyzed homocoupling/Pd-catalyzed Suzuki coupling to obtain pi-extended arene frameworks.

A molecular crystal of a 2-D hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) undergoes an unusual structural transformation after solvent removal from the crystal pores during activation. The conformationally flexible host molecule, ABTPA, adapts its molecular conformation during activation to initiate a framework expansion. The microcrystalline activated phase was characterized by three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED), which revealed that ABTPA uses out-of-plane anthracene units as adaptive structural anchors. These units change orientation to generate an expanded, lower density framework material in the activated structure. The porous HOF, ABTPA-2, has robust dynamic porosity (SA(BET) = 1 183 m(2) g(-1)) and exhibits negative area thermal expansion. We use crystal structure prediction (CSP) to understand the underlying energetics behind the structural transformation and discuss the challenges facing CSP for such flexible molecules.

An efficient and BF3 center dot Et2O-catalyzed chemoselective synthesis of diversified 1,3-diarylisobenzofuran in a high yield has been described. The reaction proceeds through sequential hydroarylation-cyclization between 2-formylarylketones and electron-rich arenes/heteroarenes. Advantageous features of the developed methodology include operational simplicity, a broad substrate scope, and applicability towards gram scale synthesis. Lignins from different tree barks, including Norway spruce (Picea abies), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), mimosa (Acacia dealbata) and blackwood acacia (A. melanoxylon), are thoroughly characterized. The lignin from E. globulus bark is found to be enriched in syringyl (S) units, with lower amounts of guaiacyl (G) and p-hydroxyphenyl (H) units (H/G/S ratio of 1:26:73), which produces a lignin that is highly enriched in beta-ether linkages (83 %), whereas those from the two Acacia barks have similar compositions (H/G/S ratio of approximate to 5:50:45), with a predominance of beta-ethers (73-75 %) and lower amounts of condensed carbon-carbon linkages; the lignin from A. dealbata bark also includes some resorcinol-related compounds, that appear to be incorporated or intimately associated to the polymer. The lignin from P. abies bark is enriched in G units, with lower amounts of H units (H/G ratio of 14:86); this lignin is thus depleted in beta-O-4 ‘ alkyl-aryl ether linkages (44 %) and enriched in condensed linkages. Interestingly, this lignin contains large amounts of hydroxystilbene glucosides that seem to be integrally incorporated into the lignin structure. This study indicates that lignins from tree barks can be seen as an interesting source of valuable phenolic compounds. Moreover, this study is useful for tailoring conversion technologies for bark deconstruction and valorization.
