A thermodynamically controlled and reversible nucleophilic addition of a monofluorinated sulfone, alpha-fluoro-alpha-phenylthio-alpha-phenylsulfonylmethane (FTSM), to aldehydes has been developed, which allows the efficient synthesis of beta-fluorinated carbinols with high diastereoselectivity.
