After a brief historical survey, the chem. of the fixing agents Al2(SO4)3.18H2O and poly(aluminum chloride) (PAC) is described in the different operation modes. Problems during the production of wood-containing and wastepaper-containing papers are discussed arising from high concentrations of impurities. To reduce the impurity concentrations, inorganic adsorption agents, like bentonite or talcum, cationic fixing agents, or combinations of them are added.
