To explore if the catalytic activity of single-metal species in halometallate catalysts can be enhanced with mixed-metal species, aluminum and gallium were simultaneously introduced to prepare a mixed-metal ionic liquid (IL) through a one pot reaction of [HN222]Cl, AlCl3, and GaCl3 in various amounts. The Lewis acidity in Friedel-Crafts acylation and alkylation reactions of these IL compositions were evaluated and all mixed-metal [HN222][xAlCl(3) + (2 – x)GaCl3]Cl ILs exhibited higher catalytic activity than AlCl3, GaCl3, [HN222][Al2Cl7], or [HN222][Ga2Cl7]. The broadening in Al-27 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of these ILs indicates the presence of dynamic anionic species, whereas matrix-assisted laser-desorption ionization time of-flight (MALDI-TOF) and acetonitrile-probed Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analyses correlates the structure-activity relationship, for instance, identifying the presence of mixed-metal-containing [Cl2GaOClAlClOGaCl2](-) species in the better-performing ILs.

We synthesized fluoroand hydroxy-containing octahydro-2H-chromenes by the Prins reaction starting from a monoterpenoid (-)-isopulegol and a wide range of aromatic aldehydes in the presence of the BF3.Et2O/H2O system acting as both an acid catalyst and a fluorine source. Activity of the produced compounds against the influenza A/Puerto Rico/8/34 (H1N1) virus was studied. The highest activity was demonstrated by fluoro(11i) and hydroxy-containing (10i) derivatives of 2,4,6-trimethoxybenzaldehyde. The most pronounced virus inhibiting effect of compounds 10i and 11i was observed at an early stage of infection. These compounds were supposed to be capable of binding to viral hemagglutinin, which is an agreement with data on the effect of compounds 10i and 11i on the viral fusogenic activity as well as by molecular docking studies.

Platelet thrombosis is the main pathogeny resulting in the low curability of ischemic stroke, a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide. Metformin, a biguanide derivative that is the first-line oral medicine for type 2 diabetes, alleviates the severity of ischemic stroke in diabetic patients and suppresses platelet activation in experimental animal model. However, the clinical implementation of commercial biguanide analogs for stroke related to platelet thrombosis remains challenging due to its weak potency, poor pharmacokinetic characteristics and possible hypoglycemia. Here, twenty-three biguanide derivatives were designed and synthesized based on the principles of bioisosteres. These derivatives were evaluated for the activity of antiplatelet thrombosis in vivo. We found that N-tri-fluoromethanesulfonyl biguanide derivative, compound b10, uniquely prevented cerebral infarction as well as neuronal function injury, and significantly decrease the mortality rate of ischemic stroke in the middle cerebral artery occlusion mice without significant side effects. We verified that b10 directly inhibited platelets thrombus formation and decreased the compactness of stroke thrombi. Particularly, b10 exhibited good potency to inhibit human platelet activation including platelet aggregation, adhesion, pseudopodia formation, integrin GPIIb/IIIa activation, CD62P expression and clot retraction. Meanwhile, the pharmacokinetics assessment showed that b10 had satisfying pharmacological characteristics including a longer duration and a higher oral absorption ratio than its parent compound. In addition, b10 remarkably ameliorated not only stroke related to platelet thrombosis but also carotid artery thrombus formation. It is concluded that the novel potent antiplatelet thrombotic agent derived from biguanide is a promising candidate for stroke treatment. (C) 2020 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Nano copper ferrite catalyst is prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, vibrational sample magnetometry, and Fourier transform infrared. The catalytic activity is probed for cross-dehydrogenative coupling of aromatic aldehydes in the presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide as the oxidant. A Rh(III)-catalyzed regioselective redox-neutral cascade process of carbenoid functionalization followed by dephosphonylative annulation of benzoic acids with alpha-diazo-beta-keto phosphonate has been realized, which led to the direct synthesis of a privileged 3-substituted isocoumarin scaffold. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a complete redox neutral method to synthesize isocoumarins using C-H functionalization strategy. In the catalytic cycle of this reaction, there are two possible pathways for the C-C coupling between ortho-positioned carbon atom of benzoic acid and the diazo carbon atom: (i) concerted 1,2-aryl shift and (ii) stepwise metal-carbene formation followed by migratory insertion. DFT study has predicted that the concerted pathway has lower activation energy as compared to the stepwise pathway by 1.5 kcal/mol.

We report iridium-catalyzed C-C formation between benzamides and terminal alkynes. With the choice of a suitable ligand, a C-H alkynylation or alkenylation product could be obtained selectively. The directed C-H alkynylation proceeded without the need for an external oxidant, while the directed C-H alkenylation likely involves an unusual vinylidene mechanism. Experimental solubilities have been determined for anthracene, benzil, 2-chloroanthraquinone, 9-fluorenone, 2-hydroxybenzoic acid, 2-methoxybenzoic acid, 2-methylbenzoic acid, 3-methylbenzoic acid, phenothiazine, pyrene, and thioxanthen-9-one dissolved in benzyl alcohol at 298.15 K. In subsurface bioremediation, electron donor addition promotes microbial Fe(lII)-oxide mineral reduction that could change soil pore structure, release colloids, and alter soil surface properties. These processes in turn may impact bioremediation rates and the ultimate fate of contaminants. Columns packed with water-stable, Fe-oxide-rich soil aggregates were infused with acetate-containing artificial groundwater and operated for 20 d or 60 d inside an anoxic chamber. Soluble Fe(II) and soil colloids were detected in the effluent within one week after initiation of the acetate addition, demonstrating Fe(III)-bioreduction and colloid formation. Diffusible Br-, less diffusible 2,6-difluorobenzoate (DFBA), and non-diffusible silica-shelled silver nanoparticles (SSSNP) were used as tracers in transport experiments before and after the bioreduction. The transport of Br- was not influenced by the bioreduction. DFBA showed earlier breakthrough and less tailing after the bioreduction, suggesting alterations in flow paths and soil surface chemistry during the 20-d bioreduction treatment. Similarly, the bioreduction increased the transport of SSSNP very significantly, with mass recovery increasing from 1.7% to 25.1%. Unexpectedly, the SSSNP was completely retained in the columns when the acetate injection was extended from 20 to 60 d, while the mass recovery of DFBA decreased from 89.1% to 84.1% and Br showed no change. The large change in the transport of SSSNP was attributed to soil aggregate breakdown and colloid release (causing mechanical straining of SSSNP) and the exposure of iron oxide surfaces previously unavailable within aggregate interiors (facilitating attachment of SSSNP). These results suggest a time dependent fashion of microbial effect on the transport of diffusivity-varying tracers. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
