In this work, a monomer-mediated in situ growth strategy was developed for the controllable construction of core-shell Co3O4@TAPB-DMTP-COF composite (TAPB, 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene; DMTP, 2,5-dimethoxyterephaldehyde; COF, covalent organic framework), which exhibits uniform size, high surface area, outstanding thermochemical stability, and ultrahigh effective surface area. The Co3O4@TAPB-DMTP-COF was further applied to develop an electrochemical sensor for the sensitive and selective determination of tertbutylhydroquinone (TBHQ). Mechanism investigations reveal that multistacked columnar channels given by TAPB-DMTP-COF shell can effectively facilitate the diffusion of TBHQ molecules to the active Co3+ sites. Under the optimal conditions, the current response exhibits two linear dynamic ranges, 0.05-1.0 and 1.0-400 mu mol L-1, and the detection limit was as low as 0.02 mu mol L-1 (S/N = 3). Little to no interference effects from other coexisting ions allows the sensor to detect low-abundance TBHQ from complicated real samples. This study not only provides a strategy for crystalline and shape-tailored growth of COF shells, but also expands their further use in electrochemical sensor.

The search of novel mPGES-1 inhibitors has recently intensified probably due to the superior safety in comparison to existing anti-inflammatory drugs. Although two mPGES-1 inhibitors have entered clinical trials, none has yet reached the market. In this study, we performed modifications guided by 3D-QSAR CoMFA on 2, which is an unsymmetrical curcumin derivative with low binding affinity towards mPGES-1. To counter the PAINS properties predicted for 2, the diketone linker was replaced with a pyrazole ring. On the other hand, both prenyl and carboxylate ester groups were introduced to improve the activity. When tested in vitro, 11 suppressed PGE(2) biosynthesis in activated macrophages and showed promising human mPGES-1 inhibition in microsomes of interleukin-1 beta-stimulated A549 cells. Sulfuric acid and aromatic compounds are abundant in the atmosphere and play an important role in aerosol nucleation and growth. The main objective of this work is to provide molecular level description of pre-nucleation clusters formed by these species. Our approach is based on size- and compositionselective generation of anionic clusters, consisting of sulfuric acid and series of aromatic carboxylates (ArCOO-; Ar =Phenyl, o-, m-, and p-CH3C6H4 ), and their subsequent characterization using photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. The photoelectron spectra show that formation of these clusters is accompanied by a significant increase of electron binding energies, implying significant stabilization gained from electron delocalization upon complexation. Comparison between the experimental and calculated results suggests that under low temperature conditions these clusters behave more like a complex of sulfuric acid and aromatic carboxylate, (H2SO4)(ArCOO-), despite the fact that ArCOO- has much higher proton affinity than HSO4-. Similar result has been previously reported for sulfuric acid formate cluster [Hou, Wang, and Valiev, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 139 (2017) 11321-11324], and indicates that interaction energy gained though the formation of these clusters is sufficient to counteract proton affinity imbalance. The calculated intermolecular binding energies (BEs), Gibbs free energies (Delta G), and evaporation rates (gamma) show that these (H2SO4)(ArCOO- ) clusters are extremely stable, with BEs of similar to 54 kcal/mol, Delta G of similar to-40 kcal/mol, and gamma of 10(-20) s(-1) . The experimental and computational results reported in this work suggest that aromatic acids may play a significant role in facilitating the early stages of sulfuric acid nucleation.
