Friedel-Crafts reaction is widely used for the C-C bond forming reaction to enable the direct connection of electron-rich arenes to electron-deficient olefins with high regioselectivity. Separation of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and hemoglobin (Hb), two proteins with almost identical molecular weight, has been a big challenge for more than two decades. Using traditional ultrafiltraion membranes separation of these proteins is possible only at the isoelectric point of one protein via electrostatic repulsion between the membrane and the other protein. Here we introduce an integral asymmetric isoporous membrane from polystyrene-block-poly(2-hydroxyethyl meth-acrylate-ran-2-(succinyloxy)ethyl methacrylate) (PS-b-P(HEMA-r-SEMA)) having random-OH and-COOH groups along the pore walls prepared by a method which combines solvent induced self-assembly of the block copolymer and nonsolvent induced phase separation (SNIPS). The membrane consists of soft isoporous channels due to swelling of the P(HEMA-r-SEMA) blocks in a hydrated state. The effective pore size of the membrane in a hydrated state is significantly lower compared to that in a dry state. These soft channels allow the permeation of BSA while retaining Hb at constant pH 7.4 where both proteins are negatively charged. In comparison to 22 commercial and in-house prepared membranes the PS-b-P(HEMA-r-SEMA) membrane presents unprecedented ideal selectivity of BSA over Hb (psi(BSA/Hb) = 16). Unlike the conventional technique in this case the electroneutrality of one protein is not mandatory which will provide significantly easier handling.

Palladium catalyzed ring-opening reaction of oxabenzonorbornadienes with anhydrides, leading to the synthesis of the di- and trimerization products in a single step have been demonstrated. An efficient sequence based on the Ugi-azide reaction and rhodium(III)-catalyzed intermolecular annulation has been established for the preparation of tetrazole-isoquinolone/pyridone hybrids. Several N-acylaminomethyltetrazoles were reacted with arylacetylenes to form the hybrid products in moderate to very good yields. The method relies on the capacity of the rhodium catalyst to promote C(sp(2))-H activation in the presence of a suitable directing group. The Ugi-azide reaction provides broad molecular diversity and enables the introduction of the tetrazole moiety, which may further assist the catalytic reaction by coordinating the metal center. The scope of the isoquinolones is very wide and may be extended to the preparation of complex compounds having heterocyclic moieties such as pyridone, furan, thiophene and pyrrole, as well as the corresponding benzo-fused derivatives. The developed procedure is simple, reproducible and does not require inert conditions.

In this project, nano-MnO2@zeolite-Y (NMOZ) was successfully prepared via hydrothermal technique and its structure was confirmed using FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, EDX and BET analyses. MnO2 nanoparticles stabilized on zeolite-NaY were used as nanocatalyst for efficient solventless preparation of 3,4-disubstituted isoxazole-5(4H)-one scaffolds via one-pot three-component reaction of ethyl acetoacetate, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, and aromatic aldehydes at 100 degrees C. One of the advantages of this new method is the non-use of a metal oxidant such as KMnO4 (greener method) and the stabilization of MnO2 to the zeolite-Y surface via ion bonding. This causes the MnO2 not be leached from the zeolite during the processes of nanocatalyst recycling in organic reactions. This simple approach also has promising features as like as safe, inexpensive and recyclable nanocatalyst, solvent-free reaction, short reaction times, high to excellent yields, and easy isolation of the products.

Saponin, as a green and available phytochemical, was immobilized on the surface of magnetite nanoparticles then doped with Cu ions (Fe3O4@Sap/Cu(ii)) and used as an efficient nanocatalyst for the synthesis of quinazoline and acridine derivatives, due to their high application and importance in various fields of science. Different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were used for the catalyst characterization such as FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, EDX, TEM, TGA, VSM, BET, DLS, CV, and XPS analyses. All characterization data were correlated with each other so that the structure of the catalyst was accurately characterized. The reactions were performed in the presence of a low amount of Fe3O4@Sap/Cu(ii) (0.42 mol%) as a green catalyst in water over a short period of time. The results show well the effective role of saponin in solving the problem of mass transfer in aqueous medium, which is the challenge of many organic reactions in aqueous medium and in the presence of heterogeneous medium. High catalytic activity was found for the catalyst and high to excellent efficiency was obtained for all quinazoline (68-94% yield) and acridine (66-97% yield) derivatives in short reaction times (less than 1 hour) under mild reaction conditions in the absence of any hazardous or expensive materials. There is not any noticeable by-product found whether for acridine or quinazoline derivatives, which reflects the high selectivity. Two reasonable mechanisms were proposed for the reactions based on observations from control experiments as well as literature reports. The catalyst could be easily recovered magnetically for at least six consecutive runs with insignificant reactivity loss.

This contribution describes sulfoximine (SFI) derivatives as a novel type of acceptor for efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. SFI presents a unique advantage by facile introduction of versatile functionalities on its secondary amine, which allows delicate manipulation of TADF properties. In a proof of principle study, three green/yellowish green TADF emitters, namely DMAC-SFIP, DMAC-SFIC and DMAC-SFIS were developed with different electron-withdrawing N-substituents based on simple donor-acceptor (D-A) typed structure. A look into the molecular conformations indicates the existence of different types of weak intramolecular interactions to suppress nonradiative decay. More importantly, effective mixing between charge transfer (CT) and locally excited (LE) triplet states is observed for DMAC-SFIP, DMAC-SFIC due to suitable electron-deficiency in the SFI segment, resulting in acceleration of the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) rate. Consequently, these new TADF emitters render excellent organic light-emitting diode (OLED) performances with external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) up to 20.4% and small efficiency roll-off.
