Four Ru(ii)-NC complexes were synthesized by one-step processes from the corresponding NC ligands with RuHCl(CO)(PPh3)(3). These complexes were tested as catalysts for alcohol dehydrogenative reactions, and complex {(C5H4N)-(C6H4)}RuCl(CO)(PPh3)(2) (1) showed the highest activity. With KOH as the nucleophile and 0.5 mol% catalyst loading, a series of carboxylic acids were synthesized in toluene without any oxidant. Catalyst 1 could be transformed to complex {(C5H4N)-(C6H4)}RuH(CO)(PPh3)(2) (6) when treated with KOH and benzyl alcohol. Complex 6 further reacted with PhCHO and H2O to generate product {(C5H4N)-(C6H4)}Ru(OCOPh)(CO)(PPh3)(2) (7). Complexes 6 and 7 exhibited similar efficiency to complex 1, suggesting that they can be regarded as the catalytic intermediates of 1.

The synthesis of highly acidic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted significant research interest in recent years. We report here the design of a strongly Lewis acidic MOF, ZrOTf-BTC, through two-step transformation of MOF-808 (Zr-BTC) secondary building units (SBUs). Zr-BTC was first treated with 1 M hydrochloric acid solution to afford ZrOH-BTC by replacing each bridging formate group with a pair of hydroxide and water groups. The resultant ZrOH-BTC was further treated with trimethylsilyl triflate (Me3SiOTf) to afford ZrOTf-BTC by taking advantage of the oxophilicity of the Me3Si group. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of Zr-bound superoxide and fluorescence spectra of Zr-bound N-methylacridone provided a quantitative measurement of Lewis acidity of ZrOTf-BTC with an energy splitting (Delta E) of 0.99 eV between the pi(x)* and pi(y)* orbitals, which is competitive to the homogeneous benchmark Sc(OTf)(3). ZrOTf-BTC was shown to be a highly active solid Lewis acid catalyst for a broad range of important organic transformations under mild conditions, including Diels-Alder reaction, epoxide ring-opening reaction, Friedel-Crafts acylation, and alkene hydroalkoxylation reaction. The MOF catalyst outperformed Sc(OTf)(3) in terms of both catalytic activity and catalyst lifetime. Moreover, we developed a ZrOTf-BTC@SiO2 composite as an efficient solid Lewis acid catalyst for continuous flow catalysis. The Zr centers in ZrOTfBTC@SiO2 feature identical coordination environment to ZrOTf-BTC based on spectroscopic evidence. ZrOTf-BTC@SiO2 displayed exceptionally high turnover numbers (TONs) of 1700 for Diels-Alder reaction, 2700 for epoxide ring-opening reaction, and 326 for Friedel-Crafts acylation under flow conditions. We have thus created strongly Lewis acidic sites in MOFs via triflation and constructed the MOF@SiO2 composite for continuous flow catalysis of important organic transformations.

This study reported a stereoselective synthesis of (+)/(+)-pentenomycin I in 4-5 steps through regioselective silylation, optical resolution and dihydroxylation, followed by an olefin formation, from a known racemic cyclopentenone prepared from 2-deoxy-o-glucose. We also accomplished the transformation of a common intermediate into a variety of analogs. In addition, the antimicrobial activities of the pentenomycin analogs were evaluated, which revealed important structural factors of pentenomycins for the antimicrobial activities. The transition-metal-catalyzed carboxylation of aryl and vinyl chlorides with CO2 is rarely studied, and has been achieved only with a Ni catalyst or combination of palladium and photoredox. In this work, the cobalt-catalyzed carboxylation of aryl and vinyl chlorides and bromides with CO2 has been developed. These transformations proceed under mild conditions and exhibit a broad substrate scope, affording the corresponding carboxylic acids in good to high yields.

A simple and efficient one-pot method has been developed for the synthesis of benzochromenes (4a-k) using V-CaHAp as a heterogeneous catalyst by the condensation of aldehydes, beta-naphthol and malononitrile in ethanol as solvent at room temperature for 20 min. The reaction, with this catalyst was carried out under mild reaction conditions with very good to excellent yields (89-98%). The material can be recycled very easily and reused for at least 6 runs without substantial loss in activity, which makes this methodology environmentally benign. We achieved a feasible and cost-effective synthesis by using non-toxic materials and minimal catalyst which is easy to handle. (C) 2015 The Authors.
