In this work, Cyrene (TM), a bio-based green solvent, has been transformed into its methacrylic derivative (m-Cyrene) for the first time. Polymerization of the newly-synthesized monomer was studied using different polymerization techniques such as bulk, solution and emulsion polymerization. Compared to solution polymerization, emulsion polymerization was found to produce higher yields and molecular weights. Cyrene (TM), along with other green solvents, was used as a polymerization solvent and was found to be the most effective (as a solvent) with the highest yield and molecular weight. The new Cyrene (TM) monomer was found to undergo rapid polymerization compared to isobornyl methacrylate (IBMA), another bio-derived monomer with a close structural similarity, and the highest polymerization rate was obtained in Cyrene (TM) as the polymerization solvent media. A reactivity ratio calculation also showed m-Cyrene to be more reactive than IBMA. The homopolymer derived from emulsion polymerization showed high glass transition temperature (192 degrees C) and thermal stability (up to ca. 266 degrees C). Cytotoxicity testing confirmed the non-toxic nature of the bio-derived monomer, making it a green bio-derived methacrylic monomer for synthesizing polymers, where high thermal stability and mechanical properties are required.

In this work, a monomer-mediated in situ growth strategy was developed for the controllable construction of core-shell Co3O4@TAPB-DMTP-COF composite (TAPB, 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene; DMTP, 2,5-dimethoxyterephaldehyde; COF, covalent organic framework), which exhibits uniform size, high surface area, outstanding thermochemical stability, and ultrahigh effective surface area. The Co3O4@TAPB-DMTP-COF was further applied to develop an electrochemical sensor for the sensitive and selective determination of tertbutylhydroquinone (TBHQ). Mechanism investigations reveal that multistacked columnar channels given by TAPB-DMTP-COF shell can effectively facilitate the diffusion of TBHQ molecules to the active Co3+ sites. Under the optimal conditions, the current response exhibits two linear dynamic ranges, 0.05-1.0 and 1.0-400 mu mol L-1, and the detection limit was as low as 0.02 mu mol L-1 (S/N = 3). Little to no interference effects from other coexisting ions allows the sensor to detect low-abundance TBHQ from complicated real samples. This study not only provides a strategy for crystalline and shape-tailored growth of COF shells, but also expands their further use in electrochemical sensor.

The extensively developed ene-type enantioselective cycloisomerization of classical 1,n-enynes provides an efficient approach to chiral cyclic 1,4-dienes. In contrast, the catalytic asymmetric heteroarenyne (heteroarene-alkyne) cycloisomerization involving the dearomative transformation of endocyclic aromatic C=C bonds remains unknown. Herein, we communicate a PdH-catalyzed enantioselective heteroarenyne cycloisomerization reaction of alkyne-tethered indole substrates (formal 1,5- and 1,6-enynes). Based on this strategy, a variety of structurally diverse chiral spiro and fused indoline derivatives bearing quaternary stereocenters and exocyclic C=C bonds are afforded in moderate to excellent yields and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98 % ee). The classical ene-type enantioselective 1,5-enyne cycloisomerization of N-vinylpropiolamides is also developed to afford chiral 2-pyrrolones in good to excellent ee values.

The separation of desired monomers from a liquid-phase mixture of lignin depolymerization products is necessary to facilitate their upscaling and upgrading for industrial applications. One effective method to separate multiple liquid-phase products is countercurrent chromatography (CCC), which is a common liquid chromatography technique that separates target solutes based on differences in their partitioning in a biphasic solvent system. Effective CCC separation requires the selection of solvent compositions to tune solute partition coefficients. To alleviate the experimental burden of selecting optimal solvent systems, we apply the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) method to compute partition coefficients of representative lignin monomers from four currently used depolymerization strategies in standard solvent systems. We further design new ternary and quaternary solvent systems that are predicted to further improve separation efficacy. On the basis of these predicted partition coefficients and empirical solvent selection criteria for CCC measurements, we suggest a range of solvent systems that would be suitable for the effective separation of aromatic lignin-derived products via CCC or similar liquid-liquid extraction methods.

Synthesis of a series of 3,6-disubstituted-bis-1,2,4-triazolo-[4,3-b][3′,4′-f]pyridazines (4) was accomplished by the oxidative intramolecular cyclization of 6-arylidenehydrazino-3-aryl-1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-b]pyridazine (3) using iodobenzene diacetate (IBD), as a green oxidant, in dichloromethane at room temperature. The compounds 3 and 4 were characterized by IR, NMR (H-1 and C-13), mass spectral data and elemental analyses. X-ray crystal analysis of sterically strained 3,6-di-(2′-fluorophenyl)-bis-1,2,4-triazolo-[4,3-b][3′,4′-f]pyridazine 4f and 3,6-di-(4′-fluorophenyl)-bis-1,2,4-triazolo-[4,3-b][3′,4′-f]pyridazine 4g indicated that pyridazine ring has twisted conformation leading to nonplanar tricyclic core. Both compounds crystallized in orthorhombic P2(1)2(1)2(1) space group, containing one single molecule per asymmetric unit. The studies reveal that the compound 4f is associated with weak, centrosymmetric F center dot center dot center dot F interactions (distance of 2.882(3) angstrom), with cis geometry, between adjacent molecules which are responsible for the formation of chains along a axis. Additionally, compounds 4 were screened for their cytotoxic activity against the human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) cell line using MTT assay, however, with not much significant activity. The cobalt alkyne complex [(prop-2-ynyl)-2-acetoxybenzoate]dicobalthexacarbonyl (Co-ASS) is an auspicious lead, which exhibits its anticancer activity mainly by inhibition of both cyclooxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2). Since COX-2 participates in carcinogenesis, a selective inhibition of that isoenzyme is aimed. To study if fluorination increases the COX-2/COX-1 inhibition ratio of the lead, substitution was respectively performed in the positions 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the aromatic moiety. The complexes 3/4/5F-Co-ASS and to a much lower extent also 6F-Co-ASS showed cytotoxic, antimetabolic, and apoptotic effects in COX-1/2-positive HT-29 and MDA-MB-231 cells and remarkably less activity in the COX-1/2-negative MCF-7 cell line. The metabolic activity in MCF-7 cells was even unaffected up to a concentration of 40 mu M. With exception of 6F-Co-ASS, the complexes strongly reduced the PGE(2) synthesis in HT-29 cells and all complexes inhibited COX-2 more effectively than COX-1 in an assay at isolated enzymes. These findings point to an interference in the COX cascade as part of the mode of antitumor action. The limited cellular effects of 6F-Co-ASS are related to its poor uptake as determined by HR CS AAS/MAS. Moreover, the cellular uptake studies confirm fluorination as beneficial tool for bioanalytical labeling. The higher quantification of fluorine by HR CS MAS makes this method about 5-fold more sensitive than HR CS AAS measuring cobalt. As a further positive result, 3/4/5/6-Co-ASS demonstrated high selectivity to tumor cells due to lack of antimetabolic activity against the non-tumorigenic bone marrow stromal cell line HS-5.

Sodium is the most abundant alkali metal in the Earth’s crust and the ocean. However, organosodium compounds have long been considered inferior to organolithium compounds, which have instead dominated synthetic organic chemistry during the last century. Despite being largely neglected because of their reactive nature, it is worth re-exploring organosodium chemistry, in light of the growing demand for sustainable syntheses without recourse to less abundant elements such as lithium. Herein, we demonstrate that, contrary to common belief, organosodium compounds can be easily prepared from aryl chlorides or (hetero) arenes and easy-to-handle sodium dispersion and, after being transmetallated to the corresponding zinc and boron compounds, they readily participate in the Negishi and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions, fundamental carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions in organic synthesis. Direct coupling reactions with organosodium species were also possible.

We report the on-demand generation of hexane-soluble (2-ethylhexyl)sodium (1) from 3-(chloromethyl)heptane (2) using a sodium-packed-bed reactor under continuous flow conditions. Thus, the resulting solution of 1 is free of elemental sodium and therefore suited for a range of synthetic applications. This new procedure avoids the storage of an alkylsodium and limits the handling of metallic sodium to a minimum. (2-Ethylhexyl)sodium (1) proved to be a very useful reagent and undergoes in-line Br/Na-exchanges as well as directed sodiations. The resulting arylsodium intermediates are subsequently trapped in batch with various electrophiles such as ketones, aldehydes, Weinreb-amides, imines, allyl bromides, disulfides and alkyl iodides. A reaction scale-up of the Br/Na-exchange using an in-line electrophile quench was also reported.
