A newly synthesized ligand derived from 2-amino thiophenol and benzoic anhydride and its Co(II), Cd(II), La(III) (in bulk and nano size), and Gd(III) complexes was investigated and characterized. The maximum elimination capacity of the newly synthesized ligand was investigated towards the removal of Co(II), Cd(II), La(III), and Gd(III) ions from aqueous solutions. It was found that the ligand has the best removal ability for Cd(II) metal of 98.66% at a concentration of 0.03 mg/L.

As a means to make new benzofuran-embedded polycyclic structures, we established two efficient one-pot sequential coupling routes to 2-amino-3-arylbenzofurans and 2-amino-3-arylnaphtho[2,1-b]furans. Further ring formation (six- and seven-membered rings) with the resulting amine moiety at the C2 position of benzofurans was realized, leading to further expansion of benzofuran-based chemical space.

Highly selective direct monofluorination of indoles and arenes was developed through an approach that allows site-specific solubility of substrate and fluorine source in the micelle. This approach was highly selective for a broad range of substrates with excellent functional group tolerance. Differences in binding constant and solubility of indoles and arenes in the micelle allowed the fine-tuning of selectivity. Control experiments suggested a radical pathway and provided insight into the role of micelles of the environmentally benign amphiphile PS-750-M. Dynamic light scattering experiments strongly indicated the site-specific solubility of the substrate and fluorine source. The methodology was successfully adapted to gram scale, and the E-factor established from a recycle study indicated that the process is environmentally responsible and sustainable.

The synthesis, as well as spectral, structural and photoluminescence properties of dipyrido[3,2-e:2 ‘,3 ‘-h]acenaphthene 5 and quinazolino[7,8-h]quinazolines 6 as representatives of the bidentate -N=/-N= superbases, are reported. These nitrogen bases being more rigid (5) or pi-extended (6) analogs of optically-mute quino[7,8-h]quinoline are both active in terms of fluorescence with quantum yields up to phi = 0.71-0.77. At the same time, their luminescence behavior is opposite to that of peri-NMe2/NMe2 naphthalene proton sponges and their hybrid NMe2/-NMe2 analogs. Although 5 and 6 exhibit visible region emission upon protonation, for the hybrid systems the fluorescence is manifested only for bases. The most remarkable observation is that the fluorescence of compound 5 can be switched on not only by means of organic or inorganic acids, but also through the formation of chelate complexes with such weak H-donors as water and primary alcohols. It was disclosed that water is present in the complex as a cluster comprising 8 interconnected H2O molecules. Overall, the studied compounds demonstrate a previously unobserved type of dual mode optical response, H-sensing (emission enhancement in 5 and 6 on protonation) and pi-sensing (emission quenching in 5H(+) and 6H(+) on coordination with pi-donors). This work seems to be an important contribution to areas such as chemosensorics, the creation of new ligands, hydrogen transfer and some other phenomena representing different types of supramolecular interactions.

Selective modification of the hydroxyl groups of sugars has been a long-standing challenge due to their proximate relative reactivity. Herein, we report a TMSOTf-catalyzed selective acetylation of the non-anomeric hydroxyl groups of several per-O-TMS-protected sugar substrates while leaving their anomeric group unaffected. In addition to standing versatile by itself, the anomeric O-TMS group left intact can be functionalized to afford key sugar precursors such as imidate donors, which could otherwise be synthesized via a stepwise anomeric deprotection-functionalization procedure.

Here, we have established a new and simple synthetic approach to the pentacycloundecane containing cage oxazole unit in four steps. The synthesis begun with a cheap and readily available materials such as 2,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde and endo-dicyclopentadiene. This approach relies on Van Leusen oxazole synthesis and [2+2] photocycloaddition as key steps. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of Cookson’s dione containing oxazole ring system. Traditional cross-coupling reactions show some disadvantages like the use of organohalides or the production of stoichiometric amounts of waste. The dehydrative homo- or heterocoupling of alcohols therefore arises as an interesting approach for a highly atom-economical formation of carbon-carbon bonds, since water is produced as the only by-product. We herein report a simple and direct, metal-free protocol for the synthesis of olefins by applying catalytic amounts of a sulfonic acid and triphenylphosphane under air. A variety of olefins could be synthesized from benzylic alcohols under relatively mild conditions. Additionally, dehydrative hydroarylation of benzylic alcohols with electron-rich arenes was possible by using only Bronsted acid under otherwise same reaction conditions. We could show that phosphane additives are essential to overcome oligomerization as main side reaction by the occupancy of the reactive carbocation intermediate.

The first total synthesis of three echinodermatous sialyl inositol phosphosphingolipids, which exhibit unusual neuritogenic activity in the absence of nerve growth factor, are reported. Highlights of the syntheses include 9-O-methylation on sialic acid, inter-residual amide bond formation between sialic acid residues, and highly stereo- and regioselective sialylation of inositol.
