Totally colorless, transparent, and highly refractive poly(phenylene thioether ether)s (PPTEs) containing thianthrene-2,7-disulfanyl moiety were developed in this study. A new 4,4′-diol aromatic compound, 2,7-(4,4′-diphenol)thiothianthrene (DPTT), with a high sulfur content was designed and synthesized to develop polymers with high refractive indices and high thermal stabilities. The PPTEs were prepared by polycondensation of DPTT with organic dihalogen compounds, such as 2,6-difluorobenzonitrile (DFBN) and 4,6-dichloro-2-(methylthio) pyrimidine (DCMP). The obtained polymers showed good thermal stabilities such as relatively high glass transition temperatures (T(g)s) in the range of 153-176 degrees C and 5% weight loss temperatures (T-5%) over 344 degrees C. The cut-off wavelengths (lambda(0)) of the PPTE films are shorter than 343 nm, and they have a transmittance higher than 93% at 550 nm. The combination of the pyrimidine and high sulfur-containing thianthrene derivatives provides the PPTEs with a high refractive index of 1.7204 and a small birefringence of 0.0106 at 637 nm.

We report an efficient and straight forward access to nitrile substituted enol esters via ionic liquid [BMIM]OH mediated hydrocarboxylation of alkynylnitriles under mild conditions. An immobilized iridium complex photocatalyst Ir(ppy)(2)(PDVB-py) was synthesized by immobilization of the iridium complex onto the nanoporous vinylpyridine-divinylbenzene copolymer (PDVB-py). Prized for their ability to reliably forge stereocenters with precise regiocontrol from simple and abundant starting materials, substrate-directable enantioselective reactions are widely used in modern organic synthesis. As such, enantioselective C(sp(3))-H functionalization reactions directed by innate functional groups could provide new routes to introduce molecular complexity within the inert hydrocarbon moiety, but to date this approach has been met with little success. While free primary aliphatic amines are common, versatile intermediates in synthesis, they are traditionally unreactive in C(sp(3))-H activation reactions. Herein we report the Pd-catalyzed enantioselective C(sp(3))-H functionalization of free aliphatic amines (cyclopropylmethylamines) enabled by a chiral bidentate thioether ligand. This ligand’s privileged bidentate coordination mode and thioether motif favor the generation of the requisite mono(amine)-Pd(II) intermediate, thus enabling the enantioselective C-H activation of free amines. The resulting C-Pd(II) species could engage in either Pd(II)/Pd(IV) or Pd(II)/Pd(0) catalytic cycles, enabling access to a diverse range of products through (hetero)arylation, carbonylation, and olefination reactions. Consequently, this versatile reactivity offers medicinal chemists a general strategy to rapidly prepare and functionalize biologically relevant amines.

Timely myocardial reperfusion salvages ischemic myocardium from infarction, whereas reperfusion itself induces cardiomyocyte death, which is called myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury. Herein, beta-carboline derivative 17c was designed and synthesized with obvious myocardial protective activity for the first time. Pretreatment of 17c effectively protected the cardiomyocyte H9c2 cells from H2O2-induced lactate dehydrogenase leakage and restored the endogenous antioxidants, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). Besides, 17c effectively protected the mitochondria through decreasing the reactive oxygen species overproduction and enhancing the mitochondrial membrane potential. As a result, 17c significantly reduced the necrosis of cardiomyocytes in H2O2-induced oxidative stress, which was more potent than polydatin. In MI/R injury rats, 17c pretreatment obviously increased the levels of SOD and GSH-Px and inhibited the apoptosis of cardiomyocytes. Through this way, the size of myocardial infarction was significantly reduced after MI/R injury in vivo, better than that of polydatin, suggesting that 17c is a promising cardioprotectant for the prevention of MI/R injury.
