The reaction of TMS-ethers of 2,4-diaryl-1,1,1-trifluorobut-3-en-2-ols with arenes in TfOH at room temperature for 5 min results in the formation of trans-/cis-1,3-diaryl-1-trifluoromethyl indanes in good yields (up to 99%). The predominant or exclusive formation of indanes with a trans-configuration of 1,3-diaryl groups has been observed. The reaction proceeds through an intermediate formation of the corresponding mesomeric CF3-allyl cations. A plausible reaction mechanism is discussed.

The electrochemically induced tandem reaction of aldehydes and two equivalents of kojic acid has been carried out in alcohols in an undivided cell in the presence of sodium halides. The absorption of electromagnetic waves by materials is usually realized by multiple mechanisms, such as interface polarization, defect polarization, multiple reflections and scattering, conductive loss and magnetic loss. Therefore, attributing microwave absorption (MA) to specific mechanisms without separating them through effective means is not rigorous. Herein, three different structures: ZnO-C core-shell nanowires, ZnO-C wire-in-tubes and carbon nanotubes, were prepared through the molecular layer deposition of polyimide on ZnO nanowires and subsequent calcination at specific temperatures. Results show that the hollow structure is beneficial to MA performance. The reflection loss (RL) values of wire-in-tube and nanotube structures are much higher than the RL values of the core-shell structure. The RL peak of nanotube structure can reach -64.42 dB. Then again, multicomponent modulation is conducive to impedance matching resulting in board effective absorption bandwidth (EAB). The EAB of the wire-in-tube structure with two components is wider than that of the nanotube structure with one component, reaching as wide as 5.76 GHz. The results substantiate the effect of hollow structure and composition on the MA performance, providing a strong basis for the design and optimization of MA materials. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. This study presents a method to calculate the surface tension of a wide variety of organic carboxylic-based acids molecules starting from the experimental data of the liquid viscosity. The first step of this research was a data collection and then an accurate selection of experimental sources for the calculation of surface tension. Besides, in order to build two different but comparable databanks, the experimental points were regressed with simple equations at the same reduced temperature range, spanning from 0.35 to 0.75. As a final step, the original relationship of Pelofsky between the natural logarithm of surface tension and the inverse of viscosity was changed to better describe the property under investigation. The simple modification of adding the reduced temperature allowed to achieve an MD of 1.24% for the whole dataset that contains 22 fluids with 170 surface tension data and 379 liquid viscosity experimental data. We present a computational study of polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities of organic molecules in aqueous solutions, focusing on solute-water interactions and the way they affect a molecule’s linear and non-linear electric response properties. We employ a polarizable quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) computational model that treats the solute at the QM level while the solvent is treated classically using a force field that includes polarizable charges and dipoles, which dynamically respond to the solute’s quantum-mechanical electron density. Quantum confinement effects are also treated by means of a recently implemented method that endows solvent molecules with a parametric electron density, which exerts Pauli repulsion forces upon the solute. By applying the method to a set of aromatic molecules in solution we show that, for both polarizabilities and first hyperpolarizabilities, observed solution values are the result of a delicate balance between electrostatics, hydrogen-bonding, and non-electrostatic solute solvent interactions.
