This protocol represents a useful extension of Catellani-type transformations.

The aim of the study presented was a comprehensive analysis of catalytic performance of palladium and platinum catalysts (1 or 3 wt% relative to the support), on SBA-16, in hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of chemical compounds generated in biomass processing (anisole, 4-methylanisole and 1,3-dimethoxybenzene). HDO of these compounds was carried out in a high pressure reactor for 4 h in temperatures from 90 to 130 degrees C and under hydrogen pressure of 25-60 bar. The catalytic performance of palladium and platinum modified materials was found to differ considerably. The SBA-16 supported catalyst modified with palladium permitted getting high conversion of the model molecules studied (often 100%), while those modified with platinum showed higher selectivity to the compounds with no oxygen atom in their structures, which allowed a significant reduction of the O/C ratio. Direct impact of the process conditions (temperature, pressure) on the degree of conversion and selectivity of the HDO process was established and characterized.

Redox modulators have been developed as an attractive approach to treat cancer. Herein, we report the synthesis, identification, and biological evaluation of a quinazolinedione reactive oxygen species (ROS) inducer, QD394, with significant cytotoxicity in pancreatic cancer cells. QD394 shows a transcriptomic profile remarkably similar to napabucasin, a cancer stemness inhibitor. Both small molecules inhibit STAT3 phosphorylation, increase cellular ROS, and decrease the GSH/GSSG ratio. Moreover, QD394 causes an iron- and ROS-dependent, GPX4 mediated cell death, suggesting ferroptosis as a major mechanism. Importantly, QD394 decreases the expression of LRPPRC and PNPT1, two proteins involved in mitochondrial RNA catabolic processes and both negatively correlated with the overall survival of pancreatic cancer patients. Pharmacokinetics-guided lead optimization resulted in the derivative QD394-Me, which showed improved plasma stability and reduced toxicity in mice compared to QD394. Overall, QD394 and QD394-Me represent novel ROS-inducing drug-like compounds warranting further development for the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

A single-pot Cu-catalyzed enantio- and diaster-eoselective tandem hydroboration/borylative cyclization of alkynes with ketones for the synthesis of carbocycles is reported. The reaction proceeds via desymmetrization and generates four contiguous stereocenters, including an all-carbon quaternary center. The method provides rapid access to [6,5]- and [5,5]-bicycles and cyclopentane products. Catalyst-controlled diastereoselectivity by selection of bisphosphine ligand is noted. Utility of the products is demonstrated by site- and chemoselective transformations that afford valuable alkenyl and allyl organoborons.

A series of substituted benzoate-bridged dichromium(II, II) complexes [Cr-2(RCO2)(4)(THF)(2)] ([Cr-2]), where RCO2- is substituted benzoate, was synthesized and its structural and magnetic properties were investigated. The orbital energies, as well as magnetic coupling energies, were also investigated using computational approaches. The HOMO/LUMO energy levels of the complexes are strongly dependent on the acidity, i.e., pK(a), of the corresponding benzoic acids (RCO2H), revealing a linear trend in the respective groups of non-ortho, mono-ortho, and bi-ortho substituted groups. The Cr center dot center dot center dot Cr magnetic coupling constant (E-S (T)) is little affected by pK(a); instead, the E-S (T) is associated with the HOMO/LUMO gap and strongly correlated with the Cr center dot center dot center dot Cr distance.

An immobilized iridium complex photocatalyst Ir(ppy)(2)(PDVB-py) was synthesized by immobilization of the iridium complex onto the nanoporous vinylpyridine-divinylbenzene copolymer (PDVB-py). Its application for the synthesis of amides, nitriles, and anhydrides was reported via reactions under the action of the visible-light-driven in situ generated Vilsmeier-Haack reagent from CBr4 in DMF. The results showed that this heterogeneous photocatalyst has extremely high activity and excellent stability to be recycled five times.

A copper/silver co-catalyzed cross-dehydrogenative coupling reaction is developed to achieve exclusively remote C5-H coupling of 8-aminoquinoline amides with the methylenic sp (3) C-H bond of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds. This protocol provides a highly regioselective synthetic route for the functionalization of 8-aminoquinoline amides at C5 under mild conditions. While several trifluoromethylation reactions involving the electrochemical generation of CF3 radicals via anodic oxidation have been reported, the alternative cathodic, reductive radical generation has remained elusive.
