An efficient method for the directing group controlled rhodium-catalyzed addition reaction of oxa/azabicylic alkenes with aromatic ketones and benzoic acids has been developed. The ketones and benzoic acids afforded different addition products when reacted with oxa/azabicyclic alkenes. The reaction between ketones and azabenzonorbornadienes furnished the ring-opening addition products. The reaction between benzoic acids and aza/oxabicyclic alkenes proceeded in the absence of silver salt, giving the 1:2 hydroarylation products in yields up to 96%.

A mild one-pot protocol for the synthesis of symmetrical biaryls by sequential Ir-catalyzed C-H borylation and Cu-catalyzed homocoupling of arenes is described. The regiochemistry of the biaryl formed is sterically controlled as dictated by the C-H borylation step. The methodology is also successfully extended to heteroarenes. Some of the products obtained by this approach are impossible to obtain via the Ullmann or the Suzuki coupling protocols. Finally, we have shown a one-pot sequence describing C-H borylation/Cu-catalyzed homocoupling/Pd-catalyzed Suzuki coupling to obtain pi-extended arene frameworks.

A novel path has been developed for the conversion of carboxylic acids into the corresponding N -acylbenzotriazoles by using 2,2-dipyridyl disulfide/PPh (3) in anhydrous dichloromethane in the presence of 1 H -benzotriazole. The hypoxia-inducible factor-la (HIF-1 alpha) pathway has been implicated in tumor angiogenesis, growth, and metastasis. Therefore, the inhibition of this pathway is an important therapeutic target for the treatment of various types of cancers. Here, we designed and synthesized 31 ursolic acid (UA) derivatives containing a tetrazole moiety and evaluated them for their potential anti-tumor activities as HIF-la transcriptional inhibitors. Of these, compound 14d (IC50 0.8 +/- 0.2 mu M) displayed the most potent activity and compounds 14a (IC50 4.7 +/- 0.2 mu M) exhibited the most promising biological profile. Analysis of the structure-activity relationships of these compounds with HIF-1 alpha suggested that the presence of a tetrazole group located at C-28 of the UA derivatives was critical for their inhibitory activities.

It remains challenging to achieve the selective cleavage of C-C bonds in lignin or lignin model compounds to produce aromatic products in high yield and selectivity. We have developed a redox-neutral photocatalytic strategy to accomplish this goal in both beta-O-4 and beta-1 lignin models at room temperature (RT) via proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process without any pretreatments of substrate, by adjusting the alkalinity of base to obtain a lignin models/base PCET pair with a bond dissociation free energy close to 102 kcal/mol. Without breaking down C-beta-C-gamma bond and any C-O bonds, this PCET method is 100% atom economy and produces exclusive C-alpha-C-beta bond cleavage products, such as benzaldehydes (up to 97%) and phenyl ethers (up to 96%), in high to excellent yields and selectivities. Preliminary studies indicated that the PCET strategy is also effective for the depolymerization of native lignin at RT, thus providing significantly important foundation to the depolymerization of lignin. A rhodium-catalyzed enantioselective ring-opening/acylation of silafluorenes is reported. Surface-confined synthesis is a promising approach to build complex molecular nanostructures including macrocycles. However, despite the recent advances in on-surface macro- cyclization under ultrahigh vacuum, selective synthesis of monodisperse and multicomponent macrocycles remains a challenge. Here, we report on an on-surface formation of [6 + 6] Schiff-base macrocycles via dynamic covalent chemistry. The macrocycles form two-dimensional crystalline domains on the micrometer scale, enabled by dynamic conversion of open-chain oligomers into well-defined similar to 3.0 nm hexagonal macrocycles. We further show that by tailoring the length of the alkyl substituents, it is possible to control which of three possible products-oligomers, macrocycles, or polymers-will form at the surface. In situ scanning tunneling microscopy imaging combined with density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations unravel the synergistic effect of surface confinement and solvent in leading to preferential on-surface macrocyclization.

Direct C-H bond oxidation of organic materials, and producing the necessary oxygenated compounds under mild conditions, has attracted increasing interest. The selective oxidation of various alkylbenzenes was carried out by means of a new catalyst containing VO2+ species supported on silica-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles usingt-butyl hydroperoxide as an oxidant at room temperature in H2O or solvent-free media. The chemical and structural characterization of the catalyst using several methods such as FTIR spectroscopy, XRD, FETEM, FESEM, SAED, EDX and XPS showed that VO2+ is covalently bonded to the silica surface. High selectivity and excellent conversion of various toluene derivatives, with less reactive aliphatic (sp(3)) C-H bonds, to related benzoic acids were quite noticeable. The aerobic oxygenation reaction of these alkylbenzenes was studied under the same conditions. All the results accompanied by sustainability of the inexpensive and simple magnetically separable heterogeneous catalyst proved the important criteria for commercial applications.

The role of inflammation in cancer generation is gaining importance in the field of cancer research. The chemo-anti-inflammatory strategy that involves using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug compounds as effective anti-tumor agents is being acceded globally. In the present study, seven new Pt (IV) complexes based on cisplatin, carboplatin and oxaliplatin scaffold bearing the anti-inflammatory drug naproxen in the axial position were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, ESI-MS, Fourier transform-infrared, H-1- and Pt-195-NMR spectroscopy. The reduction behavior in the presence of ascorbic acid was studied using high-performance liquid chromatography. The cytotoxicity against two human breast cell lines and the anti-inflammatory properties were evaluated. All the complexes are able to promote a comparable activity, with average three- and 13-fold more cytotoxic than cisplatin against MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines, respectively. The complexes show remarkable anti-inflammatory effects, which indicated their potential in treating cancer associated with inflammation and reducing side-effects of chemotherapy.

Three-, four-, and five-component host/guest crystals with multi-color and white light emission is described. Our strategy is based on the confinement of aromatic donor guests in supramolecular acceptor hosts. The supramolecular acceptor hosts (NDI-TPFB) were composed of N,N’-dipyrid-3-yl-1,4,5,8- naphthalenediimide (NDI) with two tris(pentafluorophenyl) borane (TPFB) linked by boron-nitrogen dative bonds as Lewis acid-base pairs, which spontaneously formed upon mixing the components. In the first part, a set of three-component crystals with 14 different aromatic guests were characterized to elucidate the structure-property relationships. In the latter part, a series of 17 types of four-and fivecomponent crystals were formed with the use of binary or ternary guest inclusion systems, and their structural and photophysical properties were investigated. Among them, 14 types of crystals were formed effectively without destroying the crystal structure, as determined by X-ray diffraction and fluorescence microscopy. Notably, flexible color tuning, including white light emission, was realized by tuning the guest ratio and the combinations. Various intermolecular interactions such as C-H center dot center dot center dot F interactions, pi-pi stacking, charge-transfer interactions, and inclusion phenomena were important for forming the crystals. This approach that yields a rational solution of multicomponent crystals could be potentially useful for obtaining novel photofunctional solid-state systems.
