The absorption of electromagnetic waves by materials is usually realized by multiple mechanisms, such as interface polarization, defect polarization, multiple reflections and scattering, conductive loss and magnetic loss. Therefore, attributing microwave absorption (MA) to specific mechanisms without separating them through effective means is not rigorous. Herein, three different structures: ZnO-C core-shell nanowires, ZnO-C wire-in-tubes and carbon nanotubes, were prepared through the molecular layer deposition of polyimide on ZnO nanowires and subsequent calcination at specific temperatures. Results show that the hollow structure is beneficial to MA performance. The reflection loss (RL) values of wire-in-tube and nanotube structures are much higher than the RL values of the core-shell structure. The RL peak of nanotube structure can reach -64.42 dB. Then again, multicomponent modulation is conducive to impedance matching resulting in board effective absorption bandwidth (EAB). The EAB of the wire-in-tube structure with two components is wider than that of the nanotube structure with one component, reaching as wide as 5.76 GHz. The results substantiate the effect of hollow structure and composition on the MA performance, providing a strong basis for the design and optimization of MA materials. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. A transition-metal-free electrophilic bromination and iodination of arene through C-H cleavage at room temperature has been developed in excellent to quantitative yields with broad arene scope and good regioselectivity, in which environment-benign and readily available sodium halides, NaBr or NaI, were employed as halogen sources in accompany with N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide (NFSI) as an oxidant. Studies have also demonstrated that, in this air- and moisture-resistant scalable halogenation under mild conditions, the oxidant NFSI is reduced to dibenzenesulfonimide which usually serves as the starting material for the preparation of NFSI, rendering this facile and versatile protocol promising potentials for future applications in organic synthesis.

This report describes a palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative aryl allylation between unactivated benzoic acids and allylic carbonates. This transformation successfully couples a variety of carbonates and benzoic acids in good yield (up to 94%) using 1 mol% palladium. The Rh-catalyzed C-H alkylation of benzylamine derivatives with unactivated 1-alkenes that proceeds via a picolinamide directing group is reported. The crucial role of an acid additive in this transformation is confirmed. Aromatic acids showed high linear selectivity, and aliphatic acids provided branched alkylation products as the major product. The reaction has a broad scope for benzylamines and alkenes. Deuterium labeling experiments suggest that a Rh-carbene intermediate is involved in the case of linear product formation. A different reaction pathway, however, appears to be involved in the case of branched alkylation products, and this pathway also appeared to be a minor pathway in linear-selective reactions.
