Treatment of beta-dicarbonyls with the Furakawa-variant of the Simmons-Smith reagent results in homologation and production of an intermediate zinc enolate. Treatment of the enolate with various acylating agents generate products with both gamma-dicarbonyl functionality and beta-dicarbonyl functionality.
