alpha-aminophosphonate oxadiazoles (5a-m) were prepared in high yields by reacting of 1,3,4-oxadiazole acetohydrazide (3) with appropriate aldehydes and diethyl phosphite under Kabachnik-Fields conditions using Iron triflate as a catalyst. The reaction conditions were optimized using D-optimal experimental design. Possible reaction mechanisms were considered, and structures of the new products were based upon compatible elementary and spectroscopic evidence. In vitro antitumor activities of these compounds were evaluated against human cancer cell lines of colon (HCT116), breast (MCF7) and liver (HepG2) and compared with anticancer drug, Doxorubicin, employing standard MIT assay. Compounds 5i and 5l demonstrated good antiproliferative activities against HCT116 tumor cells comparable to doxorubicin with low cytotoxicity towards normal fetal colon cell (FHC). Additionally, their capacity to activate apoptosis cascade was studied in HCT116 cell line by investigating the activation of proteolytic caspases cascade, the levels of Cytochrome C, Bax and Bcl-2. Active caspase-3 level was enhanced by 6-8-folds in HCT116 cell line when stimulated with compounds 5i and 5l compared to the control. The level of Caspases 8 & 9 was also increased signifying that intrinsic and extrinsic pathways are both activated. They also induced Bax and down regulated Bcl-2 protein level in addition to over-expressing Cytochrome C level in HCT116 cell line. The 1,3,4-thiadiazole core has been mainly used as a pharmacological scaffold in medicinal chemistry. A series of Schiff bases derived from 5-substituted-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-amine were designed and synthesized to investigate their biological activities. Structures of compounds were clarified with FTIR, H-1 NMR and elemental analysis. Due to the importance of this core in pharmacology, all these newly synthesized compounds were tested for different biological properties at the same time. Compound 3A ((E)-N-(2,5-dimethoxybenzylidene)-5-(4-methoxyquinolin-2-yl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine) and compound 4A ((E)-N-(2,5-dimethoxybenzylidene)-5-(3-methylbenzofuran-2-yl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine) possessed high DNA protective ability against oxidative Fenton mixture. Compound 1A ((E)-N-(2,5-dimethoxybenzylidene)-5-(benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine) and compound 2B ((E)-2-((5-(1H-indol-2-yl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-ylimino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol) showed strong antimicrobial activity against S. epidermidis. The most effective compound was detected as compound 3A which exhibited cytotoxicity on both PC-3 and MDA-MB-231 cancer cell lines. The IC50 of this compound was calculated as 370.7 mu M and 505.1 mu M for MDA-MB-231 and PC-3 cells, respectively. Molecular docking studies were also performed to examine the understanding of the mechanism behind the anti-cancer and anti-bacterial properties. For further study, compound 3A has the potential for utilization with chemotherapy drugs to establish a more efficient therapy strategy with minimum cytotoxicity against cancer cells. Semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) emitted from open biomass burning (BB) can contribute to chemical and physical properties of atmospheric aerosols and also may cause adverse health effects. The polar fraction of SVOCs is a prominent part of BB organic aerosols, and thus it is important to characterize the chemical composition and reactivity of this fraction. In this study, globally and regionally important representative fuels (Alaskan peat, Moscow peat, Pskov peat, eucalyptus, Malaysian peat, and Malaysian agricultural peat) were burned under controlled conditions using the combustion chamber facility at the Desert Research Institute (DRI). Gas- and particle-phase biomass-burning emissions were aged in an oxidation flow reactor (OFR) to mimic 5-7 d of atmospheric aging. Fresh and OFR-aged biomass-burning aerosols were collected on Teflonimpregnated glass fiber filters (TIGF) in tandem with XAD resin media for organic carbon speciation. The polar fraction extracted with dichloromethane and acetone was analyzed with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for 84 polar organic compounds – including mono- and dicarboxylic acids, methoxylated phenols, aromatic acids, anhydrosugars, resin acids, and sterols. For all these compounds, fuel-based emission factors (EFs) were calculated for fresh and OFR-aged samples. The carbon mass of the quantified polar compounds was found to constitute 5 % to 7 % of the total organic compound mass. A high abundance of methoxyphenols (239 mg kg(-1) for Pskov peat; 22.6 % of total GC-MS characterized mass) and resin acids (118 mg kg(-1) for Alaskan peat; 14.5 % of total GC-MS characterized mass) was found in peat-burning emissions (smoldering combustion). The concentration of some organic compounds (e.g., tetracosanoic acid) with a molecular weight (MW) above 350 g mol(-1) decreased after OFR aging, while abundances of low-MW compounds (e.g., hexanoic acid) increased. This indicated a significant extent of fragmentation reactions in the OFR. Methoxyphenols decreased after OFR aging, while a significant increase (3.7 to 8.6 times) in the abundance of dicarboxylic acids emission factors (EFs), especially maleic acid (10 to 60 times), was observed. EFs for fresh and ratios from fresh-to-aged BB samples reported in this study can be used to perform source apportionment and predict processes occurring during atmospheric transport.

The diene methyl ethers or acetates, constructed from the Li-Br exchange/addition reactions of 2-vinylbenzaldehydes and 2-(but-3en-1-yl)bromoarenes followed by etherification or acetylation of the corresponding alcohols, smoothly underwent the ring-closing metathesis (RCM) by using Hoveyda-Grubbs II as a catalyst to provide the corresponding benzannulated (Z)-cyclononenes as single products in good yields (up to 75%). The ensuing one-pot acid-mediated transannular cyclization/nucleophilic addition at C7 furnished the corresponding tetrahydro-5H-benzo[c]fluorenes as single stereoisomers with the exclusive cis stereochemistry at the ring junction (C5-C6) and trans at the site of nucleophilic attack (C6-C7) on the three contiguous stereogenic centers in good to excellent yield (up to 94%). The developed strategy was general; the reaction conditions were compatible with hydride, azide, and electron-rich aromatics as nucleophiles. In addition, various methoxylated benzannulated cyclononene acetates could be employed as substrates. Thus, tetrahydro-5H-benzo[c]fluorenes could be prepared in four steps from appropriately substituted bromoarenes and benzaldehydes in good yields (up to 56%) with excellent stereo- and regio-control.
