The stereospecific gold(i)-catalyzed nucleophilic cyclization of beta-monosubstituted o-(alkynyl)styrenes to produce C-1 functionalized 1H-indenes including challenging substrates and nucleophiles, such as beta-(cyclo)alkyl-substituted o-(alkynyl)styrenes and a variety of alcohols as well as selected electron-rich aromatics, is reported. The hydration-condensation of alkyne,1aldehyde,2C-C coupling followed by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of in-situ generated azomethine ylide from Isatin,3and L-proline,4 aor sarcosine,4 bfurnished novel spirooxindoles,5under solvent-free green-chemical conditions, in high regio and stereo selectivities and yields. The regio and stereochemistry of the synthesized derivatives were characterized by 2D NMR Spectroscopic studies.

To explore if the catalytic activity of single-metal species in halometallate catalysts can be enhanced with mixed-metal species, aluminum and gallium were simultaneously introduced to prepare a mixed-metal ionic liquid (IL) through a one pot reaction of [HN222]Cl, AlCl3, and GaCl3 in various amounts. The Lewis acidity in Friedel-Crafts acylation and alkylation reactions of these IL compositions were evaluated and all mixed-metal [HN222][xAlCl(3) + (2 – x)GaCl3]Cl ILs exhibited higher catalytic activity than AlCl3, GaCl3, [HN222][Al2Cl7], or [HN222][Ga2Cl7]. The broadening in Al-27 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of these ILs indicates the presence of dynamic anionic species, whereas matrix-assisted laser-desorption ionization time of-flight (MALDI-TOF) and acetonitrile-probed Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analyses correlates the structure-activity relationship, for instance, identifying the presence of mixed-metal-containing [Cl2GaOClAlClOGaCl2](-) species in the better-performing ILs.

A variety of appropriately substituted internal alkynes were transformed into the corresponding cyano-substituted phenanthrenes, dihydronaphthalenes, and cyclohepta-1,3,5-trienes in moderate to excellent yields by treatment with imidazolium thiocyanate 1, which serves as an easy to handle [CN](+) precursor, in the presence of BCl3. This study presents an efficient synthesis of 3-[6-(substituted-phenyl)-[1,2,4]triazolo[3,4-b][1,3,4] thiadiazol-3-yl]-1H-indazole via dehydrative condensation with cyclization of 4-amino-5-(1H-indazol-3-yl)-4H-[1,2,4]triazole-3-thiol and fluorinated or nonfluorinated carboxylic acids in presence of phosphorous oxychloride. The multistep reaction pathway proceeds through different compounds. Present synthesis has the advantages of easily accessible starting materials, convenient synthesis, simple reaction condition, wider substrate scope, and higher yield (75% to 90% isolated).

A series of Fe/h-BN catalysts promoted with Cu or Mn were prepared for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The physicochemical properties, crystal structures and morphologies of the catalysts were characterized by N-2 physisorption, FT-IR, TPR, XPS, XRD, MES and TEM. It is found that iron oxide nanoparticles are highly dispersed on h-BN matrix due to the anchoring effect of surface defects and the accommodation of porous structures of h-BN. The characterization results indicate that strong interaction between iron oxide and h-BN is present on un-promoted catalyst, which endows the h-BN supported iron catalyst with stable properties under FTS conditions but severely retards reduction of the catalyst. The addition of Cu to Fe/h-BN can to some extent overcome the strong interaction by introducing more sites for dissociating H-2. It is observed that Cu promoter can increase the reduction or carburization degree and thus enhance the FTS activity. The addition of Mn to Fe/h-BN can weaken the strong interaction by altering the electron structure of iron species. And the electron-rich Fe species are responsible for easy reduction and the enhanced FTS performance. Besides, a higher activity can be realized by co-adding Cu and Mn to the Fe/h-BN catalyst. These results suggest that the synergistic effect of Mn and Cu can largely improve the performance of Fe/h-BN catalyst without impairing the stability of the catalyst. The present study paves a way to tailor the performances of FTS catalysts with h-BN as support.

Background: Chalcones substituted by methoxyl groups have presented a broad spectrum of bioactivities, including antifungal, antibacterial and antiproliferative effects. However, a clear and unambiguous investigation about the relevance of this substituent on the chalcone framework has not been described. Objective: The purpose of this work is to assess the antibacterial, antifungal and antiproliferative activities of the two series of seventeen synthesized regioisomeric methoxychalcones. Series I and II were constituted by cbalcones substituted by methoxyl groups on rings A (5-12) and B (13-21), respectively. In addition, the library of methoxychalcones was submitted to in silico drug-likeness and pharmacokinetics properties predictions. Methods: Methoxychalcones were synthesized and their structures were confirmed by NMR spectral data analyses. Evaluations of antimicrobial activity were performed against five species of Candida, two Gram-negative and five Gram-positive species. For antiproliferative activity, methoxychalcones were evaluated against four human tumorigenic cell lines, as well as human non-tumorigenic keratinocytes. Drug-likeness and pharmacokinetics properties were predicted using Molinspiration and PreADMET toolkits. Results: In general, chalcones of series I are the most potent antifungal, antibacterial and antiproliferative agents. 3′, 4′, 5′-Trimethoxychalcone (12) demonstrated potent antifungal activity against Candida krusei (MIC = 3.9 mu g/mL), eight times more potent than fluconazole (reference antifungal drug). 3′-Methoxychalcone (6) displayed anti-Pseudomonas activity (MIC = 7.8 mu g/mL). 2′,5′-Dimethoxychalcone (9) displayed potent antiproliferative effect against C-33A (cervix), A-431 (skin) and MCF-7 (breast), with IC50 values ranging from 7.7 to 9.2 mu M. Its potency was superior to curcumin (reference antiproliferative compound), which exhibited IC50 values ranging from 10.4 to 19.0 mu M. Conclusion: Our studies corroborated the relevance of methoxychalcones as antifungal, antibacterial and antiproliferative agents. In addition, we elucidated influence of the position and number of methoxyl groups toward bioactivity. In silico predictions indicated good drug-likeness and pharmacokinetics properties to the library of methoxychalcones.

This report describes a palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative aryl allylation between unactivated benzoic acids and allylic carbonates. This transformation successfully couples a variety of carbonates and benzoic acids in good yield (up to 94%) using 1 mol% palladium. This salt free allyl-arylation proceeds without added base, copper, or silver. The only stoichiometric byproducts are carbon dioxide and tert-butanol.
