Historically accessed through two-electron, anionic chemistry, ketones, alcohols, and amines are of foundational importance to the practice of organic synthesis. After placing this work in proper historical context, this Article reports the development, full scope, and a mechanistic picture for a strikingly different way of forging such functional groups. Thus, carboxylic acids, once converted to redox-active esters (RAEs), can be utilized as formally nucleophilic coupling partners with other carboxylic derivatives (to produce ketones), imines (to produce benzylic amines), or aldehydes (to produce alcohols). The reactions are uniformly mild, operationally simple, and, in the case of ketone synthesis, broad in scope (including several applications to the simplification of synthetic problems and to parallel synthesis). Finally, an extensive mechanistic study of the ketone synthesis is performed to trace the elementary steps of the catalytic cycle and provide the end-user with a clear and understandable rationale for the selectivity, role of additives, and underlying driving forces involved.

HGF/c-Met signalling pathway plays an important role in the development of cancers. A series of 6,7-dimethoxy-4-anilinoquinolines possessing benzimidazole moiety were synthesised and identified as potent inhibitors of the tyrosine kinase c-Met. Their in vitro biological activities against three cancer cell lines (A549, MCF-7, and MKN-45) were also evaluated. Most of these compounds exhibited moderate to remarkable potency. Among them, compound 12n showed the most potent inhibitory activity against c-Met with IC50 value of 0.030 +/- 0.008 mu M and it also showed excellent anticancer activity against the tested cancer cell lines at low micromolar concentration. Molecular docking verified the results and revealed the possible binding mode of the most promising compound 12n into the ATP-binding site of c-Met kinase.

In the current paper we open up the potential of SuFEx reactions as enantioselective reactions, analyze the role of Si and outline the mechanism of this reaction. As a result, fast, high-yielding, Si-free and enantiospecific SuFEx reactions of sulfonimidoyl fluorides have been developed, and their mechanism shown, by both experimental and theoretical methods, to yield chiral products.

The chemical composition of essential oils (EOs) isolated by hydrodistillation from Pterocarpus soyauxii Taub. root wood and root bark were determined for the first time by GC/MS analysis. The EOs gave a percentage yield (w/w) of 0.34 % and 0.31 % for root wood and root bark respectively. A total of 60 compounds accounting for 86.1 % of the root wood EO composition were identified with monoterpenes (45.4 %) and sesquiterpenes (14.7 %) as predominant constituents. Root bark EO gave 53 identified constituents which make up about 78.5 % of the EO dominated by non-terpenes (23.4 %) and alkanes (14.1 %). The EOs are good sources of limonene (16.9 %), gamma-terpinene (9.8 %) and p-cymene (6.70 %). The anti-diabetic (alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase models) and antioxidant activities (DPPH and H2O2 models) of EOs were evaluated in comparison with standard drugs. Alpha-amylase inhibition gave IC50 values (mg/mL) of 0.0493 and 0.0471 for root wood and root bark EOs respectively, compared to acarbose the standard anti-diabetic drug (0.0401) while alpha-glucosidase assay gave IC50 values (mg/mL) of 0.0517 and 0.0486 for root wood and root bark EOs respectively, compared with acarbose (0.0418). In the DPPH antioxidant assay, root bark EO showed higher activity (0.157 mg/mL) compared to root wood EO (0.159 mg/mL) while Root wood and root bark EOs had IC(50 )values (mg/mL) of 0.157 and 0.171 respectively using the H2O2 model. Results revealed the presence of chemical constituents in the EOs which could be responsible for activities expressed by the plant.

An efficient and BF3 center dot Et2O-catalyzed chemoselective synthesis of diversified 1,3-diarylisobenzofuran in a high yield has been described. The reaction proceeds through sequential hydroarylation-cyclization between 2-formylarylketones and electron-rich arenes/heteroarenes. Advantageous features of the developed methodology include operational simplicity, a broad substrate scope, and applicability towards gram scale synthesis. The utility of isobenzofuran derivatives as the diene was extended to the synthesis of [4+2] cyclo-adducts with DMAD and the synthesis of 1,2-dicarbonylarenes in good yields.

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are ubiquitous and contaminate soil, surface waters, atmospheric aerosol, precipitations, indoor and outdoor environments. However, the occurrence, transformation and fate of NPs in the environment are still unclear. In this work, polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) are used as a proxy of NPs to study their reactivity and potential impact on atmospheric and surface waters. In particular, the reactivity with hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) in the aqueous phase is investigated. For the first time, a reactivity constant for the reaction of NPs with center dot OH is measured, strongly dependent on the exposed partide surface area of NPs. Degradation products (short chain carboxylic acids and aromatic compounds), obtained by direct and center dot OH-mediated photolysis of PS-NPs suspensions, are identified by mass spectrometry. Irradiation of a PS-NPs suspension under natural sunlight for 1 year has shown the formation of formic acid and organic compounds similar to those found in riverine and cloud dissolved organic matter, which could contribute significantly to the dissolved organic matter in the aqueous phase. A new class of bidentate ligands was prepared by a modular approach involving Rh-catalyzed C-H annulation reactions. The resulting conformationally constrained ligands enabled the Pd-catalyzed C-H alkenylation at electron-rich and sterically less hindered positions of electron-rich arenes while promoting the facile oxidation of Pd(0) intermediates by oxygen. This newly introduced ligand class is complementary to the ligands developed for Pd-catalyzed oxidative reactions and may find broad application in transition-metal-catalyzed reactions.
