Picolinamide group assisted sp(3) C-H bond oxidation of methylene groups to the corresponding carbonyl compounds has been achieved by using simple bottle ferrocene as catalyst and Cu(OAc)(2) or tert-butyl peroxybenzoate (TBPB) as oxidant under mild conditions. This method is applicable for picolinamide bound organic as well as organometallic compounds with yields in the range of 46-82%. Control experiments and mechanistic studies indicate that a radical mechanism is responsible for these oxidative transformations in which ferrocene acts as a catalyst.

The methoxy-, hydroxy-, and carbonyl-substituted benzenes are the simplest fragments from the lignin separation feedstocks. Extensive experimental thermochemical studies of these compounds were carried out, including combustion calorimetry, vapor pressure measurements, and differential scanning calorimetry. We have collected available primary experimental results on enthalpies of formation and vapor pressures as well as on phase transitions, liquid-gas, liquid-solid, and crystal-liquid. These data were evaluated using empirical, semiempirical, and quantum chemical methods. The consistent sets of evaluated thermodynamic data were used to design the method for predicting enthalpies of vaporization and enthalpies of formation of di- and trisubstituted benzenes. It is expected that parameters and pairwise interactions will be transferable to predict the thermochemical properties of poly methoxy-substituted and poly hydroxysubstituted benzenes that appear in reaction products of lignin transformations in the value-adding chemicals and materials.

Metal homoenolates are valuable synthetic intermediates which provide access to beta-functionalized ketones. In this report, we disclose a Ni-catalyzed beta-alkylation reaction of cyclopropanol-derived homoenolates using redox-active N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) esters as the alkylating reagents. The reaction is compatible with 1 degrees, 2 degrees, and 3 degrees NHPI esters. Mechanistic studies imply radical activation of the NHPI ester and 2e beta-carbon elimination occurring on the cyclopropanol.

The FGFR family is characterized by four receptors (FGFR 1-4), binding to 18 ligands called fibroblast growth factors (FGFs). Friedel-Crafts (FC) acylation reactions were exploited in the preparation of ketone-functionalized aromatics. Environmentally more friendly, solvent-free mechanochemical reaction conditions of this industrially important reaction were developed. Reaction parameters such as FC catalyst, time, ratio of reagents and milling support were studied to establish the optimal reaction conditions. The scope of the reaction was explored by employment of different aromatic hydrocarbons in conjunction with anhydrides and acylation reagents. It was shown that certain FC-reactive aromatics could be effectively functionalized by FC acylations carried out under ball-milling conditions without the presence of a solvent. The reaction mechanism was studied by in situ Raman and ex situ IR spectroscopy.

A series of quinoline-chalcone (E)-1-[3 or 4-(7-chloroquinolin-4-ylamino) phenyl]-3-(phenyl substituted) prop-2-ene-1-one (4, 5), and quinoline-pyrazoline hybrids 7-Chloro-N-[3 or 4-(4,5-dihydro-5-(phenyl-substituted)-1H-pyrazol-3-yl] phenyl) quinoline-4-amine (6, 7) were synthesized with the aim of achieving an antimalarial and anticancer dual action. Most of the compounds showed significant inhibition (%>80) of beta-hematin formation. The existing structures were tested in vivo as potential antimalarials in mice infected with P. berghei ANKA, chloroquine susceptible strain. Some of the compounds exhibited antimalarial activity comparable to that of chloroquine. Moreover, the compounds induce cell death on two human cancer cell lines (Jurkat E6.1 and HL60) without affecting the primary culture of human lymphocytes. Flow cytometry analysis confirmed the increase in apoptotic cell death after 24 h. Based on the structural analysis, these quinoline hybrids represent new compounds potentially useful for malaria end leukemia treatments.

This study reports a simple process to synthesize and separate of 2-(substituted-phenyl) benzimidazole derivatives with high yield and efficiency. Specifically, by reacting ortho-phenylenediamines with benzaldehydes using sodium metabisulphite as an oxidation agent in a mixture of solvent under mild condition, twenty-three compounds of benzimidazoles were obtained and separated easily using hexane and water to wash, respectively. The structure of all obtained compounds was identified by FTIR, NMR and HRMS. The SAR analysis of synthesized benzimidazoles on human lung (A549), breast (MDA-MB-231) and prostate (PC3) cancer cell lines showed that the presence of methyl group at 5(6)-position on benzimidazole scaffold was a contributing factor influencing the anticancer activity. The presence of electron-donating groups (OH, OMe, -NMe2, -O-CH2-C6H5) also caused significant increase of anticancer activity, while the presence of electron-withdrawing groups (-NO2, -CF3) on the phenyl group at 2-position of benzimidazole ring decreased the ability of inhibition of synthesized benzimidazoles. The compounds 2f and 2g displayed the significant anticancer activity on both A549 and PC3 cell lines.
