The position of the N atom in the pentacyclic ring of heterocyclic molecules affects the excited-state decay: A case study of isothiazole and thiazole

The radiationless decay of the isothiazole and thiazole molecules in the gas phase is investigated by a combination of static MS-CASPT2 computations with dynamics simulations, and some deactivation pathways are identified leading from the lowest excited singlet (S1) state back to the electronic ground (S0) state. The dominant relaxation pathway of the excited isothiazole is found to involve out-of-plane ring deformation (ring puckering) at the C4=C5(H8)?S1 moiety, while the excited-state decay of thiazole can proceed through the ring puckering and S1?C2 bond cleavage pathways both of which happen at the S1?C2(H6) = N3 moiety. On the basis of the calculation results, we suggest that both ring-puckering and ring-opening routes should play rather important roles in the photophysics and photochemistry of heterocyclic molecules, and the position of the N atom in the heterocyclic ring has an effect on the excited state deactivation.

Unusual coordination in a silver thionate complex. Synthesis, structural characterization and theoretical calculations of dinuclear and polynuclear silver(I) thiosaccharinates with pyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline

Treatment of Ag6(tsac)6 (tsac = thiosaccharinate anion) with pyridine (py) and 1,10-phenanthroline (o-phen) each affords two novel silver(I)-thiosaccharinate complexes: dinuclear [Ag2(tsac)2py] (1) and polynuclear [Ag(tsac)(o-phen)]n (2). Both crystal structures have been determined by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic structural analysis (IR and Raman, UV-Vis, 1H and 13C NMR) have also been made for both compounds. Thermal stability analysis (TGA and DTA) of complex 1 are used to confirm the strength of the pyridine coordination to the silver ion. The molecular structure of complex 1 shows some astonishing characteristics. The two silver atoms are in different environments: one of them is surrounded by two S atoms, while the other completes its coordination sphere by three N atoms, two from the thiosaccharinate anions and the third from a pyridine molecule. The short Ag(1)-Ag(2) contact distance, 2.9681(8) A, indicates an interaction between the two silver metal atoms exists. Complex 2 shows a thiosaccharinate molecule bridging two silver atoms through the exocyclic S atom while the o-phenanthroline ligand is coordinated as a bidentate N,N chelate, forming a polynuclear chain. Quantum chemical calculations confirm the argentophilic character of the Ag-Ag interaction in complex 1, and its structure and vibrational assignments were correlated and confirmed theoretically.

Improvement of Verdejo white wines by contact with oak chips at different winemaking stages

The effect that the addition of wood at different stages of the winemaking process has on the volatile composition and sensory characteristics of Verdejo wines has been studied. Verdejo control wine was made by the traditional winemaking process without oak chips. Oak chips (7 g/L) were added at different stages of the winemaking process: during alcoholic fermentation (OCAF) and in the young wine (OCW). Higher alcohols, ethyl acetate, hexyl acetate, isoamyl acetates and ethyl esters of straight-chain fatty acids were present at higher concentrations in wines that had contact with oak chips during alcoholic fermentation when compared to control wines. The highest concentrations of benzene compounds, oak lactones and furanic compounds were found in both wines in contact with oak chips, particularly in CW samples. Different sensorial profiles were obtained for the wines depending on the stage of the winemaking process at which the chips were added. All wines investigated in this study can provide a viable alternative to traditional Verdejo wines.

Vibrational analysis of thiosaccharin and thiosaccharinate anion. A gradient-corrected density functional and experimental study

A gradient-corrected density functional (DFT) study of thiosaccharin molecule and of the corresponding nitranion was carried out using various combinations of exchange and correlation functionals, with a special emphasis on the vibrational analysis of the studied species. The employed DFT methodologies included the B3LYP, mPW1PW91, HCTH and the OLYP combinations of functionals, using the 6-31+G(d,p) basis set for orbital expansion in solving the Kohn-Sham SCF equations. Full geometry optimizations of thiosaccharin molecule and the corresponding nitranion were carried out employing Schlegel’s gradient optimization algorithm. Subsequently, harmonic vibrational analyses were carried out for the minima located on the corresponding molecular/ionic potential energy hypersurfaces. Also, Fourier transform infrared (FT IR) spectra of thiosaccharin and a series of metal thiosaccharinates (those of Na, K, Mg, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg and Pb) were recorded at room and liquid nitrogen boiling temperature. Experimental FT IR vibrational spectra of the studied systems were analyzed in the light of the computed density functional harmonic force fields for free thiosaccharin molecule and its nitranion. The performances of various DFT methodologies employed were compared.

Photophysical and Photoprototropic Characteristics of 2-Aminobenzothiazole in beta-Cyclodextrin Medium

The formation of stable inclusion complexes between neutral and monocationic species of 2-aminobenzothiazole (2ABT) with beta-CDx is observed with significant enhancement in absorbance and fluorescence intensity. The stoichiometry of the 2ABT and 2ABTH? with beta-CDx is found to be 1:1 at pH?6.8 and 1.1. Their binding constant values for neutral and monocationic species are found to be 1239.3 and 1259.2?M?1, respectively. Lifetime analysis, FT-IR spectral and SEM image analysis strongly supports the formation of the inclusion complex between 2ABT and beta-CDx. Photoprototropic study shows that there is no remarkable difference in the pKa and pKa* in aqueous and beta-CDx media, which is rules out the formation of the inclusion complex with ?NH2 group of 2ABT inside the cavity of beta-CDx i.e., the ?NH2 group of 2ABT is in aqueous environment. Based on stoichiometry, binding constant and acidity constant values, the structure of the 1:1 complex is proposed.
