The present invention concerns a process for the purification of 5- [2-[4-(1,2-benzisothiazol-3-yl)-1-piperazinyl]ethyl]-6- chloro-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one of the formula (I) from a composition comprising said compound, wherein said compound is reacted with maleic acid or acetic acid to obtain an acid addition salt of the following formula (II), wherein R is formula (IV), or formula (V).
